Homemade Glazed Doughnuts

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1/4 cup warm water (105°F to 115°F)

1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted

5 cups all-purpose flour, more for dusting

Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Glaze:

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until frothy, about 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix together the yeast mixture, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, butter, and 2 cups of flour. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough comes together and is no longer sticky.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Punch down the dough and turn it onto a floured surface. Roll the dough out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter or use a large and a small biscuit cutter to make doughnut shapes.

Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry doughnuts in hot oil until golden on both sides. Drain on paper towels.

To make the glaze, whisk together milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar until smooth. Dip each doughnut into the glaze, turning to coat. Let dry on a wire rack.
